23rd September, 2014, was the date that gaming enthusiasts in China were eagerly waiting for since it was on this date that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) had promised the release of its latest gaming console, Xbox One. However, subsequent to the announcement today that the release would not be taking place as planned on the given date, disappointment is rife in the air, particularly since the event has been postponed till the end of this year with specific date having been mentioned.
Following is the explanation that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) came up with for its last-minute cancellation –
“At Xbox, we pride ourselves on delivering first-rate gaming and entertainment experiences, and to allow us to deliver on that promise, we need to reschedule the launch of Xbox One. Working with our partner, BesTV, we look forward to launching in China by the end of this year.”
Several streams of thought have been put forth to explain this sudden change and one of the first pertains to the company having run into bad weather with the Chinese Government as regards anti-trust violations. At present Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s practices are under the scanner as far as Chinese authorities are concerned for having violated laws pertaining to Windows 8 operating system.
That said, China has evolved as the third largest gaming market in the world after the ban on this form of entertainment that had been placed in the year 2000 was lifted after a decade. According to experts, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) would not take a risk of avoiding Chinese markets because of its problems with the law since it would translate into a deep dent in revenue. Therefore, the fact that the release was cancelled just three days prior to the D-day is indicative that something serious must have come up which the company could not have overlooked or ignored.
One consolation, though, still remains and it is the assurance given by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s general manager, Xbox division in China that avid gamers who have placed pre-orders for this product will be the first to receive it along with a gift as an acknowledgement of their trouble. Whatever had been planned to take place at Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai, will also proceed as planned including the giveaway of 100 consoles of Xbox One.
