Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Chromebook is taking lead as the device of choice for more US schools over Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPad, latest data from IDC says. Data indicates that Google has supplied a total of 715,500 Chromebook laptops to US schools in the third quarter, beating Apple’s iPad, which had filled a lower demand of 702,000 from US schools for the same period.
The education market has traditionally been dominated by Apple and Microsoft, which makes this new trend a huge win for Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL). Priced at $199 up as against iPad’s $379 discounted tag price for the previous year, Chromebook has made a stunning growth in in the last two years.
When Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) released Chromebook way back in 2010, it was not intended for the education market. Google itself does not make the device, but other partner companies do which include Samsung, HP, and Dell – and all these companies are quite aggressive in pushing the Chromebook laptop to schools. Currently, the education sector accounts for 75% of all laptop sales in the US for the third quarter, as per data from IDC.
Not only does the latest IDC data indicates Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Chromebook lead over Apple’s iPad. It also shows that Windows-based devices from Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is affected as well, with its market share declining to 51%, a significant decrease from 63% the previous year. On the other hand, Apple’s 94% share of the K-12 US education market for the past few years has gone down to 85% this year.
Competition in the industry is positive and helps schools achieve more with less money, according to Sheryl R. Abshire, chief technology officer of the Calcasieu Parish Public Schools, Louisiana District, in an interview with Education Week.
