Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), the U.S. tech giant is expanding its activities in Europe. The company made an announcement Tuesday that it will build a data hub in the Dutch Provide of Groningen, The Netherlands. The center is planned to cost the company 600 million Euros ($773 million).
Through a blog post, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) said that the data center will take a total of 4 years to complete and thus will be fully operational by end of 2017. The company however said that some minor operations will begin as early as mid 2016.
The post said that the construction process will create over 1000 jobs and the completed center will provide about 150 jobs for contractors and full time employees combined. The jobs at the facility won’t require employees to hold PHDs in computer science, the post went ahead to say. Instead, IT technicians, electrical and mechanical engineers, catering, facilities, and security staff are the workers who will land jobs at the center.
This center will bring data centers owned by Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) in Europe to four. The three are in Ireland, Finland and Belgium.
The facility will cover a total land surface area of 44 hectares. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Spokesman Mark Jansen said that the site was picked because of its reliable renewable energy supply, which is environmental friendly. The area also has a mild climate that will make cooling of systems cheaper.
Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is currently using a facility that’s owned by TCN, which is located in Eemshaven. The company has said that the rented data center will still continue to operate.
Google Inc has said that it’s more efficient for the company to build a couple of large data centers than building many small ones.
